Last week’s Budget confirmed the government hailed approval for the London DLR extension to Thamesmead and Beckton, backed by TfL and GLA borrowing
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has since issued a joint policy statement, alongside the Mayor of London’s office, to reaffirm plans to develop the Thamesmead and Beckton area.
Earlier this year, the Thamesmead Waterfront was recommended as one of 12 potential locations for the next generation of new towns by the New Towns Taskforce.
In addition to delivering up to 25,000 new homes, the aim is to create 10,000 jobs in the region through this development.

“The Housing Secretary and the Mayor of London are committed to bringing forward ambitious plans for housing delivery, making sure the unique opportunity at Thamesmead Waterfront and Beckton Riverside, as two of the largest remaining brownfield sites in London, are used to their full potential,” read the MHCLG policy statement.
“As well as stimulating economic growth, this will help to address London’s housing crisis and meet the government’s housing ambitions.”
The MHCLG’s joint policy statement also clarified that no decisions on new town locations would be made until a Strategic Environmental Assessments had been undertaken to understand the environmental implications for these sites.
